Treatments

When deciding on a product that is most suited to your application, it is not just about choosing the right fibre that is important, but also what additional treatment you might need. The treatments are many and varied and all are designed to increase the performance in someway.

If the need is for protection in extreme temperature conditions; or protection against molten metal splashes, additional chemical resistance, if the requirement is to be non permeable, weather resistant or many, many other concerns, then THS will be able to suggest the best treatment to meet your needs. Standard treatments include:

Weavelocking, Aluminium Foils and Aluminium Films, Silicone Rubber - one or 2 sides - all in a variety of colours, Neoprene Rubber, Polyurethane Rubber, Vamac Rubber Other polymers include: Hypalon, Natural Rubber, EPDM, PVC Viton and many more. Graphite, Vermiculite, Calcium Silicate The list is endless and all enhance the performance of their base membranes.

Silicone

Silicone coated glass cloth is one of THS?most extensive ranges, with many varieties of coating weight, colour and widths available from stock.

Silicone Rubber: Temperature range -60˚C to 220˚C.

Silicone rubber coating is an application of a pre-coloured silicone rubber solution to either one side or to both sides of the cloth. Standard colours are silver grey, white and red, but other colours are possible. For example, we have produced the colours blue, orange and black. Once again there are standard coating weights, but others are available.

Silicone has excellent weather and ageing resistance and has high stability to ozone and UV light. It is also water repellent and is resistant to water vapour. Silicone rubber is non-halogenic and flame retardant.

Foil

Aluminium Foil

Silicone Rubber: Temperature range -60˚C to 220˚C.

Aluminium Foil: Temperature range 150°c.

Aluminium foil faced is the lamination of a pure aluminium foil to one side of the cloth. The material is generally used for the manufacture of insulation matresses and insulation jackets. As well as having reflected propertise the foil gives an attractive and compatible appearance.

The temperature limit for this cloth is not specific to the foil or the base material, but to the adhesive which starts to oxidise at approx. 150°c.

Graphite

THS Graphtex range is based on the treatment of glassfibre based fabrics with a complex graphite solution. The treatment not only increases the temperature rating of the base cloth, but also gives it greater abrasion resistance.

  • Continuous temperature resistance up to 700˚C
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Good insulating properties

Applications Include: Underfoot gangway covers, anti-splash curtains, hot debris collection, plumbers pads, welding spark protection, flexible connectors, compensator assembly.

Aluminium Foil: Temperature range 150˚C.

The temperature limit for this cloth is not specific to the foil or the base material, but to the adhesive which starts to oxidise at approx. 150˚C.

Weldblock

The WELDBLOCK range is an extremely popular one. The base fabric is treated with a mineral based aqueous dispersion which provides a coating of platelets, which at high temperatures, melt to form a protection for the glassfibre. The treatment increases abrasion resistance and also significantly increases it’s temperature resistance.

  • Continuous temperature resistance up to 1000˚C
  • The cloth was subjected to a blow torch test and after 32 minutes the test was discontinued as the cloth retained it’s integrity and showed no signs of immediate degradation.
  • Good insulating properties
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Low smoke emission
  • Withstands hot metal splashes and welding sparks
  • An alternative to ceramic and silica fibre where greater strength is required at high temperatures

Applications Include: Underfoot gangway covers, anti-splash curtains, welding spark protection, insulation protection, heavy duty welding blankets, hot debris collection.

Weavelock

Weavelock: Temperature range 200˚C.

To enable the user to cut, sew and punch holes more effectively. The treatment stiffens the cloth slightly to reduce the amount of fraying during fabrication. In some cases, coloured pigments are employed in the weavelocking process The weavelock solution disperses at 200˚C, but once this has occurred the base cloth remains in place and is effective at up to 550˚C (glassfibre).

Polyurethane

Polyurethane Rubber: Temperature -35˚C to 120˚C.

Can be applied to one or both sides. The standard colour being silver grey. PU has good resistance to oils and solvents and has very good abrasion resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 150˚C for short bursts.

Neoprene

Neoprene Rubber: Temperature -35˚C to 115˚C.

Generally applied to both sides of the cloth. It is resistant to most chemicals and oils and has reasonable weather resistance. It has very good ozone resistance and is, therefore, good for outdoor conditions.

Vamac Rubber: Temperature -30˚C to 160˚C.

Like neoprene, Vamac is resistant to most chemicals and has good resistance to ozone, sunlight and water. Vamac is extremely tough and therefore has good abrasion resistance. It is non-halogenic and exhibits low smoke emission.

Calcium Silicate or Silica Wash

As an alternative to Graphtex, these treatments are available in colours other than black.

  • Continuous temperature resistance up to 700˚C - short burst up to 750˚C
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Good insulating properties

Applications Include: Heavy duty mattresses, compensator assembly, industrial curtains, flexible connectors.
